Freshening up the living room with a little paint and fabric.

The winter blues had me down here...we've been inside a lot this year.  I was starting to feel like I needed to redo my whole house.  You know that feeling?  You start looking at the IKEA catalog and plotting how you could just do this or that, and before you know it, you've mentally redone your whole house.

I knew I needed a little change, and I didn't want to spend much, so with a little fabric, some mod podge and moving some baskets in from another room, I was able to freshen up the living room just enough to tide me over for awhile, and make it seem a little more cheerful.

The drawer above was mod podged with the fabric that I also used on the curtain that took a half hour to make with an iron and some Heat Bond.

I moved the Poang chair in from the music room and put a pillow and throw on it for a different look.

This old mirror was at my parent's house in my old bedroom.  My son and I painted it with craft paint one morning...King's Gold to be exact.   Prior to this the accents were a lime green, which you can see here.

This print  from Hide n Seek was in another spot, but I moved it out here because it fit for the winter.

So for just a few dollars and a little time, the living room looks a little different, and I feel a little better.  I don't know what it is, I just like change!  I like to change the look of my environment.  Did this cure me of wanting to redo everything?  Not totally...I still want to tackle the kitchen this summer.  But I do feel a lot better, and just a little bit of change is enough for now.  Enough to cheer up this house, and enough to keep this room interesting.

What's your favorite way to freshen up a room's look?

  1. I do exactly what you do! Use new pillows and throws. And then gather all similar colored accessories from my house and use them in the room I'm redecorating. Right now, the kitchen is red themed and the living room is navy, yellow and orange :)

  4. Good for you for getting creative! I love Ikea for inspiration. Looking through their catalogs or wandering their aisles always gets me in the mood to "freshen" or "change" things up a bit. I usually go for paint or fabric. It's usually the most inexpensive ways to perk up a room.

ps...we did our kitchen last year (someday hopefully that post will make it to the blog) and though it was a ton of elbow grease it was SO worth it. We love it!!
