I Made Bread!!

IMG_7988

I made bread for the first time ever this weekend, and it was awesome!  I kind of can't believe it turned out.  I thought making bread was complicated and the dough was temperamental and you had to keep kneading it and what not, so I never tried.  Then I saw this recipe on Pinterest, and the thousands of comments, and I decided to attempt it.

I used white spelt flour and it was really, really good.  My loaf did not get quite as tall as the one pictured in the original recipe, but it was very good, with a nice crust.  It reminded me of the bread you get at an Italian restaurant for dipping in oil and herbs.

I have the Martha Stewart Dutch Oven from Macy's, similar to this one.  (I think mine is an earlier model), and it worked very well.

If you've never made bread before, I highly recommend this recipe.  Give it a try!  It is so easy and so worth it.

Do you guys bake your own bread?  I'd love to hear if you do!  And if you have a recipe that is tried and true, share it in the comments!

  1. Yay for homemade bread! I always feel so accomplished when I make it (even though it's not that hard...shhh don't tell anyone)!

  2. Yum! I use a similar recipe for making bread regularly and it's so good and not too difficult at all. :-) I haven't tried spelt flour - I'll have to give that a try.

Things that I've found helps with good rising is, letting the dough proof longer rather than shorter. I usually let mine go 16-18 hours and then really preheating the dutch oven, 30-45 minutes. After about 20-25 minutes of baking I take the lid off the dutch oven and still leave the bread in the oven for another 5-15 minutes depending on how brown and crispy you like your crust. The crust will soften as it sits and cools too, so don't be alarmed if it feels really "hard" when it comes out.
